Marvel’s Avengers Endgame finally has been unleashed upon the world and we finally get to know what happens next. This is the 22nd film in the all connected and ever-expanding series known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the filmmakers really accomplished something here. Avengers Endgame is the perfect conclusion for what has come thus far.
The film is brought to us by two dynamic duos. The first duo
are the pair of directors who are also brothers Joe and Anthony Russo.
Originally known to me as the You, Me and
Dupree guys, they have directed some of my favorite films in the MCU
including: Captain America The Winter
Soldier, Captain America Civil War,
and Avengers Infinity War. The
writers of this piece are also no stranger to the Marvel films as Christopher
Markus and Stephen McFeely have previously done the screenplays for Captain America The First Avenger, Captain America The Winter Soldier, Captain America Civil War, Thor The Dark World, and Avengers Infinity War.
Normally I like to try and find ways to say that people don’t
need to see anything before seeing a movie. It’s a real treat when a film can
stand completely on its own but still have homages to what has become before. That
being said, I cannot imagine anyone being able to watch Avengers Endgame without having seen at least half of the Marvel
Cinematic Universe. Truthfully, it really would behoove people to have seen all
the movies at least once as it really does seem like every single film is
referenced here in some shape or another.
Obviously, some films have a greater impact
than others, but really every film gave us something to get us here to Endgame.
That level of detail and care is really what makes this the kind of movie
people will love. Avengers Endgame is
a reward to the fans all over who have been on this journey since 2008 when Robert
Downey Jr. as Tony Stark declared to the world “I am Iron Man.”
While the real impact is how this film relates to the overall journey through the MCU, there is a lot of plot and character jam packed into this film. The film is three hours because its really three movies. Yes, this film follows the three-act structure that everything follows, but each act is about an hour in length and could stand on their own as their own movie, or as their own episode in a television series (as I have said numerous times in previous posts, the MCU is more like a serialized series than individual films.)
Each act in the film carries its own tone, style, and intent. Whereas all of Infinity War was epic with many broad
strokes and relentless intensity, Endgame is more varied in its pace and action with some quiet moments that show character growth and reflection. Though its
obvious that the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, Endgame has a sense of finality. I
can honestly say that every main character we have followed
since Phase One got what they had been chasing. How they got it and what they
actually got may surprise some audience members, but those that have been
paying attention this whole time we get it.
I really can’t say anything more. Marvel and
Thanos have demanded our silence and I am forced to obey for now. Sometime in
the coming weeks (or maybe even this weekend) I will post a spoiler filled
overview of the events in the film which flesh out what I discuss above.
Normally I like to talk about the cast and their performances but even that is
part of the spoiler territory. All I can is that this is a big long movie and
everything major gets wrapped up with love and care. By the time the credits
rolled (and actually during the roll) I had a sense of the filmmakers
recognizing the grand achievement and thanking all those involved in the same
way Peter Jackson and company did with Lord
of the Rings: Return of the King back in 2003. Almost as if to say to all
of the cast, filmmakers and even the fans: Thank you. That’s what I think we
all really wanted from this movie; to be rewarded for our passion and love of
this series of films. Avengers Endgame
is that reward. Just make sure you go to the bathroom during the trailers.
