Captain Marvel Update: What Does the Confirmed Cast List Mean?

Written By FeastnFlix on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 | 8:42 AM

Yesterday Disney released news that production has begun on Captain Marvel, their first female lead film. In addition to the photo below, they included a confirmed cast list which has fans very excited and filling with speculation.

Caption: Brie Larson (left) gets hands-on help from Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt, 57th Wing Commander (right), on a recent trip to Nellis Air Force Base
in Nevada to research her character, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, for Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel.”

The cast list released includes Brie Larson (duh she is Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Samuel L. Jackson (reprising his role as Nick Fury), Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace (who will likely be playing young Carol Danvers), Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, and Clark Gregg.

I am sure many people are speculating where stars like Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn will be fitting in, but I am more excited to see how returning cast like those last three names will fit in.

Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson is a sorely missed staple of the MCU films and not only will it be exciting to see him back on the big screen, but also likely playing a younger Agent Coulson. Remember that it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Captain Marvel is set in the 90's. Could this be Agent Coulson's first mission with SHIELD? Is he even an agent at this point? What about fellow SHIELD agents from back in the day like The Cavalry Melinda May? At one point during the promotion for of the first Avengers, Clark Gregg tweeted out: "Meeting some Skrull friends for lunch. Thanks for the all the support! Coulson out!" What makes this comment interesting is that the Skrulls are in Captain Marvel (also announced at San Diego Comic Con). Does this mean there was a missing scene in Avengers where Agent Coulson dealt with Skrulls? And if so, does this mean Agent Coulson encounters Skrulls in Captain Marvel? So many possibilities where this all can go!

The other two names are a real shock. I love Djimon Hounsou and while I was happy to see him in a Marvel film (Guardians of the Galaxy), I was disappointed how small his role was. And of course Lee Pace is returning as a younger Ronan The Accuser. Ronan The Accuser is HUGE character in the Marvel comics, especially when it comes to their cosmic adventures. To have Ronan snuffed out at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy was another disappointment. But since this film is in the 90's, looks like we will get to see these characters alive and in action. Perhaps this film will get into how and why Ronan become the zealot and terrorist he is known as in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Their involvement really connects Captain Marvel to the cosmic scheme of things by having the Kree-Skrull War act as a kind of Rogue One event that sets in motion the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy. But what else will it set up? March 8, 2019 can't come soon enough.

So by going back in time, it seems Marvel is giving fans what they want with the return of these three underused characters without undermining the continuity of past films; thus proving that Marvel has a plan and know what they are doing. Doesn't hurt that Nicole Perlman (who wrote the first script on Guardians of the Galaxy) was apart of creating the script for Captain Marvel. And I cannot wait to see more from this clearly talented individual.
